When it seems that contemporary art auction sales can’t get any higher all it takes is a new season of contemporary art sales to break new records. As reported by ARTNews this week Christie’s $852.9 million sale was the highest ever total for an auction, new records were set for works by Cy Twombly, Ed Ruscha, Peter Doig, Martin Kippenberger, Sturtevant, and Seth Price. And sales of Andy Warhol’s work continued to make headlines with Triple Elvis [Ferus Type] (1960) and Four Marlons (1966) selling well above their estimates for $81.9 million and $69.6 million, respectively, making a tidy profit for the German casino who purchased the works in the late 1970s for $185,000.
