We are often asked if flood insurance is necessary in “one hundred year” flood zones. These are low likelihood of flood zones – B,C,X. Make no mistake, this does not mean that there is chance of flooding once in one hundred years for any home in these zones. It’s important to understand what makes a property vulnerable to inundation. FEMA maps do not take into account the risks of intense rainfall, or microbursts. New data from the non-profit First Street Foundation indicates that there are actually 14.6 million homes at risk instead of the 8.6 million identified by FEMA.
