Non-profits face unique risks as summarized in this helpful article. Even though the volunteers are unpaid they should be treated like employees, with proper workplace safety protocols and should only be given duties for which they have adequate training. Organizations should insist on signed volunteer waivers to outline risks of the volunteer work. Also, non-profits should never offer a stipend which could be construed as a payment and thus transform the volunteer into an employee.
