This New York Times interview of William Rose, a senior researcher at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, includes helpful insight into the dynamics of freezing water in household pipes. Rose spent two years studying how, where and why pipes burst and it sounds like he might be the ultimate authority on what to do when pipes freeze and how to prevent burst pipes.
