We don’t usually recommend books on the Chartwell blog but when it comes to great stories about Winston Churchill we make an exception. Chartwell was Winston Churchill’s family home and every year on our Chartwell holiday card we feature an inspirational Churchill quote so the Churchill connection is particularly meaningful for us. Eric Larson’s The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz tells the story of life during Churchill’s first year in office. It reads like a novel except this is the historical record of life in wartime from the diaries of people who surrounded the prime minister. If you are looking for something to keep you occupied during another Covid19 interruption, Larson’s latest is a great read and also an excellent audio book. Read more here.
